We set up Brighter and Ethical Workplaces with Brighter Berkshire with the aims of:
helping to improve the mental well-being of individuals and teams in Reading’s workplaces and reducing the stigma associated with mental illness.
Together we’re applying Ethical Reading’s core values and the best mental health tools to create positive change. We hope this will result in a happier, more productive and more resilient workforce.
Our first public event was an open day, held during Mental Health Awareness Week, on the theme of workplace stress. The topic was inspired by the realisation that stress is a major factor behind the fact that two thirds of us will experience a mental health issue in our lifetime.
The open day was a chance for employers and individuals to find out about some of the mental health support available locally. We showcased organisations including Mental Health First Aid, Compass Recovery College, Berkshire Health Foundation Trust and The Federation of Small Businesses as well as Brighter Berkshire. Business and community leaders and Ethical Reading members were also there to share their mental health stories.
The open day was held at ibis Styles Oxford Road, and everyone who came along received a free day pass for later use. The hotel also sponsored a free prize draw.
If you need support for your own mental health or that of colleagues, you can download a useful contact sheet from the Brighter and Ethical Workplaces page of our Resources section.
